What is a stimulus?

Short films aim to communicate ideas to their audience. They can point out small moments worth celebrating, shock audience members with new insights, start conversations, inspire a change in beliefs and values, entertain and ignite imaginations.

A stimulus is something that you can use as a starting point to develop ideas that can be explored in your short film. You can try using an image, a movement, or an excerpt of a text, sound or film as your stimulus.

Consider the stimulus photograph on this page.

  • Describe what you see.
  • What does it remind you of?
  • What questions come to mind?
